This past weekend, my husband and I, along with my parents and my brother, took Butters on her first camping trip. Or, maybe I should say “glamping” trip… See, her camping experience was much more glamorous than anything I ever had growing up. She had air conditioning, a restroom and a bed that wasn’t the ground.
When I was little, it was all about the tent and making sure you didn’t bring dirt or bugs in with you when you went to bed. For Butters, it was making sure she didn’t leave the door open and let all of the air conditioning out of the trailer. Although my daughter didn’t have to rough it on her first camping trip, I think she got the idea of how fun it could be.
The food, however, did not change on this trip. It was amazing! My mom always plans out the menu days in advance and has everything ready to go in the coolers when we head out. This time she let me help, though. My contribution was a Dutch oven cobbler.
For Very Berry Camp Cobbler, you will need…
2 (10-16 oz.) bags frozen mixed berries
1 cup granulated sugar
2 boxes white cake mix
1 (20 oz.) bottle lemon-lime soda
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
Dutch oven
charcoal
This cobbler is one of the easiest recipes I have ever made. It is basically a dump cake, but the flavors of the warm berries mixed with a cake crust are oh so good.
To get started, set your charcoal in the fire ring and light so it can be heating while you are preparing the cobbler. Now place both bags of berries at the bottom of the Dutch oven.
Then sprinkle them with granulated sugar.
Layer on the cake mixes.
Slowly pour the soda over the cake mix, and gently stir to make sure the liquid works its way into the cake mix.
Sprinkle with brown sugar.
Cover and cook over nine, red hot coals with an additional 15 coals evenly distributed on the lid. Let it cook for about 30 minutes.
This was a little treat to celebrate an amazing trip. We all had fun and are ready to go camping again. We have decided to wait until it isn’t 108 degrees, though. From all of us at Texas Table Top, enjoy!

Can this be baked in the oven? Sounds like a great recipe for “camping” at our lake house.
Hi Kathy! This would work well in the oven too. The coals heat the Dutch oven to about 350 degrees so you could do it in the oven for 350 for 30 minutes or so and you should have the same results. Just make sure to use a Dutch oven so it heats from the top and bottom. Let me know how it turns out. KB
I baked this recipe in my dutch oven in my oven at home and it took far longer. It was delicious but it took over an hour and never really browned very well.
Hi Brieanne, I am glad you enjoyed it but sorry it took longer than expected. To help with the browning in the oven you might try removing the lid for the last 10 minutes of baking to give it a more golden look.
Awesome recipe. Taste was out of this world. Way too much sugar to enjoy a full serving as well as everyone that ate it. Lots of half eaten bowls. To anyone that plans to use this recipe please don’t feel bad if you decide to leave 1 cup of sugar out or at least reduce the amount you put in. I will try again without 1 cup of sugar. Thanks again Kelly!
