Y’all, one of our Texas Farm Bureau members in Colorado County is doing something so cool, and I had to share it with our Texas Table Top readers. Chef Ryan Kulhanek creates amazing pieces of art from food. While at The Culinary Academy of Austin, Chef Ryan stumbled upon a talent–and a love–for fruit carving. Now he’s turned that talent into a popular business, Live Food Creations.
I visited Chef Ryan at his shop down in Weimar a few weeks ago and got to see him in action. Click on the thumbnails below to see some photos I took while I was there. You also can read more about Chef Ryan and Live Food Creations in Texas Farm Bureau’s latest Texas Neighbors publication.
- Chef Ryan makes his first cut on a watermelon, showing how he starts his creative process.
- He says he usually starts with a design from the middle and works his way out.
- Watching him work is impressive. Several small, careful cuts start to form a beautiful work of art.
- Chef Ryan begins to add details to his design.
- The finished product! This design took him about 45 minutes, but he says he spends hours on designs for his clients.
- Live Food Creation clients request all sorts of displays, not just watermelons. One time Chef Ryan made these apple turtles for an entire softball team, complete with the players’ numbers on the “shells.”
- Fruit arrangements and vegetable trays also are popular client requests.
- The Texas Farm Bureau staff was totally blown away by Chef Ryan’s TFB-inspired design.
