Although summer doesn’t officially begin until next month, for millions of Americans the summer season unofficially began over the Memorial Day weekend with the firing up of the grill.

While I personally don’t grill, I love the taste of a good steak or a barbecued chicken breast fresh off a charcoal grill. The smell of the fire, the heat and the taste of the All-American beef evokes so many memories from my childhood that it just doesn’t feel like Memorial Day without it.

I love pasta. Really, I think I must have been Italian in my past life. I would eat pasta every day if my waistline could handle it. See, my problem is moderation.

Just like most everything else in life, pasta must be eaten in moderation. When I think of pasta, I think about the biggest bowl of spaghetti or a giant plate of chicken alfredo. And even though you can eat those things every once in a while, you shouldn’t have them every day.

For months now, we at Texas Farm Bureau have been anticipating a rise in food prices as the epic drought of 2011—which lasted, in some areas, through 2012 and into 2013—caused crops to wither and cattle herds to shrink. Texans’ food costs actually declined for a few quarters, but it seems the drought has finally caught up to prices at the grocery store.

According to the first quarter Grocery Price Watch survey, Texas food prices are up about 5.5 percent over last quarter and a little more than 3 percent from this time last year. Here’s a look at the 16-item basket of food staples:

March 20 was the official beginning of spring. The trees are budding, and the flowers are beginning to bloom. The summer vegetables are starting their journey. There is a spring fruit that’s in full glory right now, though—the avocado. Right now, they are readily available and at a good price!

Avocados  have some major health benefits, as well. They are low in cholesterol and high in vitamin E and fiber. Although high in fat, it is the good fat that your body needs.  And they are super yummy.

The new year has started, and it’s time to start following our New Year’s resolutions. What are you planning to do? Eat healthier, work out more or maybe cook more?

Mine is to cook more. You may think I cook constantly, but I really don’t. With the convenience of restaurants and fast food, many of us don’t cook like our parents or grandparents used to. I plan to change that at our house this year. What better way to start than with Spaghetti Pie, a recipe to honor National Spaghetti Day today.
