This summer calls for more meat

Can you smell that? It’s the unmistakable aroma of the 2012 grilling season. With another Memorial Day in the books, the summer is off to a running start with the return of hot temperatures and cookouts. Grills across the country are being cleaned, charcoal and wood stocked and refrigerators filled in preparation for the season.
Summer time reminds me of time spent with grandparents in backyards with sprinklers running and meat smoking.
My grandpa especially loved his station at the grill. As a veteran, his patriotism was almost matched by his love of good food, as his round belly proved.

Last Saturday, I found myself in Llano, Texas. When driving through Llano, it’s almost a sin for a devout Texas barbecue disciple to drive past Cooper’s Old Time Pit barbecue without paying homage to the great, above-ground smoking pits.
I stopped and was not disappointed.
While enjoying the delicious brisket, red beans and spicy sauce, I started wondering how Texans’ love affair with barbecue began. So I did a little digging.
The origins of Texas barbecue, like many things about the state, were influenced by European immigrants.

Sometimes it takes a major happening to remind you how much you love something. Such is the case with Dublin Dr Pepper. Earlier this week, you probably saw Amanda’s post on the sad ending of Dublin Dr Pepper and a video looking back on this great product. I remember drinking Dublin Dr Pepper as a child and how much sweeter it was than other sodas. It was a rare occasion when we got it, so it was always a treat at our house.

How many times have you taken a trip in search of good barbecue, only to resemble Wile E. Coyote chasing after the Road Runner? Search in vain no more.
After years of traveling around the state, the folks at Texas Monthly know great barbecue. But the beauty of this app is it allows anyone to comment and rate the best (and worst) barbecue joints in Texas.
