Never a bare grocery shelf

What would it be like to go to the grocery store and none of the shelves be stocked? No cereal. No milk. No fruits and veggies. To be honest, that thought doesn’t usually cross my mind.
And why should it? In America, we’ve never even come close to that problem—thanks to generations of farmers who continue to take the reins.
A new crop of young and enthusiastic farmers is emerging, ready to continue agriculture’s legacy. In a time when many college graduates are left unemployed, agriculture majors have an incredible job placement rate. I’ve seen rates near the 100th percentile from major agriculture programs like Iowa State, leading students to opt for a life on the farm over careers in investment banking and law.

In the famous words of Hank Snow and more recently Brian Burns, “I’ve been everywhere man. I’ve been everywhere.” Now that summer is officially over, I’ve had a few minutes to look back on the places we have been and the people we got to see. Since Butters is a little older now, we took more family trips on the weekends and even spent a week at the beach for the second year in a row.

Welcome, Autumn! Oh, how I’ve missed your cool breezes and falling leaves. I must say, fall is one of my favorite times of the year. I have love for all of the seasons, but this time of year is just so refreshing. The tastes, the smells, the colors…amazing! Another bonus of this beautiful season is that it gives me an opportunity to cook without melting. My ol’ kitchen can certainly put off some heat.

Fortunately, we live in a society that creates markets to meet customers’ desires and needs. Customers want to be able to buy produce from local farmers? Farmers markets are created to connect the two groups. And the movement is growing really quickly in Texas.
