Texas rain: Come again another day!

Picture this—it’s an early summer afternoon and you had planned to go to the pool with some friends. The forecast says there’s a slight chance of rain, but you get ready for a sunny day outdoors anyway. Suddenly, you hear the rumble of thunder and big, fat drops start to fall from the sky. Instant disappointment sets in.
If you start singing “Rain, rain, go away! Come again some other day…,” you probably didn’t grow up on a farm.

Did you know that the month of June is Dairy Month? No, really, a whole month set aside to honor and enjoy all things dairy. Cream, butter, milk…they all get their time in the spotlight.
So this week I decided to put a few of my favorite dairy products together to see what yumminess I could turn it into. I was able to get three of the main ingredients to be milk products. Then I added chocolate for good measure.

So you have probably heard me say before how big a deal breakfast is at my house and, of course, living in Texas, Tex-Mex is too. One of my family’s favorite things to do on the weekend is go to one of the many Tex-Mex restaurants in Waco on Saturday morning for breakfast. It’s my favorite because I get a reprieve from being the cook and cleaning staff at the house. It is my husband and daughter’s favorite because they get to have chorizo.

Okay, so I know that the first day of summer is technically not until June 21, but when you combine the heat, the school year ending in a matter of days and all of the garden pictures my friends are posting on Facebook, I just can’t help but get a little ahead of myself. Although summer doesn’t officially begin until next month, for millions of Americans the summer season unofficially began over the Memorial Day weekend with the firing up of the grill.
While I personally don’t grill, I love the taste of a good steak or a barbecued chicken breast fresh off a charcoal grill. The smell of the fire, the heat and the taste of the All-American beef evokes so many memories from my childhood that it just doesn’t feel like Memorial Day without it.
