Bittersweet and full of goodness. That’s how I like to describe grapefruit.

As a kid, I can remember eating it for breakfast. I even had a special spoon for it. And with a sprinkle of sugar, I was more than happy to sit there and section each triangle of meat from the rind.

Unfortunately, I don’t have enough time for that most mornings. But I can still get my grapefruit fix by having a few of these little candies on hand.

For Candied Grapefruit, you will need…candied grapefruit
2 small grapefruit
2 c. powdered sugar
water for boiling

Grapefruit has a unique taste all its own. To me, it starts bitter. Then turns sweet. And there’s more than one way to eat it–like these candied versions!

Start by preheating your oven to 275 degrees. Wash and slice one of the grapefruits into large circles. You should be able to get four or five rounds out of it.

Place the sliced grapefruit into a pot of water and bring to a boil. Let the slices cook for about two minutes and then remove from the heat.

While the slices are boiling, skin the second grapefruit. Remove as much of the white rind as possible since this causes a good bit of the bitterness. Next, slice and quarter. Most of the time it will section itself after you slice it, so just go with sizes you are comfortable with.

Pat the section dry and dip them in powdered sugar. Move them to a lined baking sheet.

Pat dry the slices and place them on a lined baking sheet. Sprinkle them with powdered sugar.

Place both sheets in the oven for 1 hour to cook down the grapefruit. You will want to flip everything over halfway through.

Finally, once they are through cooking, move the candies to a cooling rack so they cool and dry completely. Then, store in an airtight container.

These candies are great by themselves. Or add them to your favorite summer tea as garnish and flavoring. From all of us at Texas Table Top, enjoy!
