Little hands in the kitchen are always welcome in our house. From cooking to cleaning, I like to have the company and to teach my daughter how to prepare food and how to keep a kitchen. There are many things kids can learn from a kitchen that you wouldn’t think of. Like reading, math and organization, just to name a few.

And finding a fun recipe for a holiday or event can bring even more joy to the cooking experience. Like this week’s recipe.

For Elf Biscuits, you will need…elf-biscuits
12 to 15 plain or honey graham crackers
1 c. sugar
1 c. pecans, chopped
3/4 c. butter
1-1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1-1/2 tsp. vanilla

One key thing to know when cooking with kids is to make sure their jobs are suited to their age. Butters is getting old enough to work with the stovetop and the oven, but I’m still very careful when it comes to things being too hot, like the sugar we are working with for this recipe.

Start by preheating the oven to 300 degrees. Butter the bottom of a large cookie sheet and lay out all of the graham crackers in even rows so they touch. My cookie sheet holds 15 but many hold 12.

In a small saucepan, combine the butter, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla. Heat using medium heat, stirring constantly to keep the sugar from burning.

Once everything melts down into a syrup, remove it from the heat and pour over the graham crackers. Spread it in a thin layer so everything is covered. Be sure to protect your hands to keep from getting burned by the sugar. This is a great lesson in following directions and patience for kids as many are tempted to want to taste things while cooking.

Next, sprinkle the chopped pecans over everything and place in the oven to bake for 10-12 minutes or until they look bubbly.

Remove and let them cool completely. Then break into pieces.

These treats are great for a holiday table or for gifts for friends this time of year. They are crispy and just the right size for little hands. I hope you take some time with your children in the kitchen during the holidays. It can be so much fun for them and for you. From all of us at Texas Table Top, Merry Christmas and enjoy!
